General characteristics of the field of study and the assumed concept of education:
Long-cycle studies in Special Education allow teachers to train at a high level, considering the needs of modern society and education. They enable the acquisition of interdisciplinary knowledge in human development, the causes and types of disabilities, and educational and rehabilitation opportunities for people with disabilities. They also allow us to learn about the legal, theoretical, and methodological basis of inclusive education and the planning, conduct, and evaluation of classes conducted in a group of students with diverse educational needs. The study program is supported by program co-related modules and open-access modules offered to all students at the University of Silesia. Studies in Special Education prepare graduates to work as teachers in all current forms of education for children and young people with special educational needs: inclusive, integrative, kindergartens, and special schools. They also prepare employees of institutions of the Ministry of Family, Labor, and Social Policy (occupational therapy workshops, social welfare homes, day support centers, and others - aimed at the care and social rehabilitation of people with disabilities). The qualifications obtained by the Decree of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of July 25, 2019, on the standard of education preparing for the teaching profession. From the third semester, a student chooses one of the specialties offered: education and rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities or those with autism spectrum disorder. Classes are conducted in Polish; selected courses in English for international students are also offered.
Graduation requirements:
The condition for admission to the diploma examination is to achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the study program, to obtain a certificate of an appropriate level of language proficiency in a foreign language and to obtain positive grades for the diploma dissertation. The condition for graduation is to pass the diploma examination with at least a satisfactory result. A graduate receives a higher education diploma confirming obtaining the qualifications of the appropriate degree. Detailed rules of the diploma process and the requirements for the diploma thesis are set out in the Rules and Regulations of Studies at the University of Silesia and the diploma regulations.

Program kształcenia na kierunku pedagogika specjalna jest zgodny ze Strategią rozwoju Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w Katowicach na lata 2020-2025 obejmująca program działań strategicznych na lata 2019-2020 oraz kieruje się Misją przedstawioną w dokumencie przyjętym przez Senat UŚ w dniu 20 maja 1997 roku oraz przywołaną w Statucie Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w Katowicach z dnia 28 maja 2019 roku, w którym wskazano także wartości, jakim hołduje społeczność Uniwersytetu, tj. 1.kształcenie oraz kształtowanie cnót intelektualnych i obywatelskich, w tym rzetelności, krytycyzmu, szacunku dla innych, poszanowania wolności i praw człowieka i obywatela; 2.wpływ na otoczenie Uniwersytetu, krzewienie wiedzy i wartości humanistycznych, przyczynianie się do rozwoju tego otoczenia z wykorzystaniem osiągnięć naukowych, dydaktycznych i artystycznych, a także współpracę z gospodarką, instytucjami publicznymi i organizacjami społeczeństwa obywatelskiego. Przyjęcie od roku akademickiego 2019/2020 nowych efektów kształcenia na kierunku pedagogika specjalna, wdrożenia najnowszych standardów kształcenia nauczycieli oraz od roku 2023/2024 zmiana programu studiów zgodnego z Nową Koncepcją Studiów wynika z realizacji zadań określonych w Strategii rozwoju Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w Katowicach na lata 2020-2025, tj. - oferta dydaktyczna UŚ w dużej części spójna z priorytetowymi obszarami badawczymi, np. POB 1: Harmonijny rozwój człowieka – troska o ochronę zdrowia i jakość życia; (stan docelowy O6 Strategii). Absolwent kierunku, to nauczyciel pedagog specjalny kształcący i wychowujący uczniów o specjalnych potrzebach edukacyjnych oraz osoby dorosłe, które z różnych powodów doświadczają wykluczenia społecznego. Specialization: Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder
General description of the specialization:
The specialization addresses people who want to gain interdisciplinary knowledge of the etiology, pathomechanisms, and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Theoretical competence and practical skills acquired during internships provide the opportunity to learn the educational and therapeutic methods needed to monitor the educational and therapeutic process of children, adolescents, and adults with ASD. Students of the specialization Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder acquire a wide range of theoretical knowledge, competencies, and practical skills that enable them to carry out the diagnosis of individuals with ASD, recognize complex care, upbringing, educational and therapeutic situations, determine the appropriate way to proceed, select effective methods and techniques of therapeutic interaction in school, out-of-school and family environments. Students learn about the latest trends in education, rehabilitation, and support of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Studying special education in the specialization Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder shapes the proper attitudes toward these people. It develops sensitivity to the problems of this group of people and their families and the need to build such attitudes in society. Upon graduation, graduates will be prepared to work as a specialist teacher conducting classes with children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder in mainstream kindergartens, special kindergartens and other forms of preschool education, mainstream elementary schools, special elementary schools, integrated schools, and schools with integrated departments, as well as a teacher co-organizing the educational process in mainstream kindergartens and schools, in integrated institutions and institutions implementing inclusive education.
Internships (hours and conditions):
Internships are an integral part of the study program, carried out by students in individual fields, levels, profiles and forms of study. Internships are to help in confronting the knowledge acquired during studies with the requirements of the labour market, acquiring skills useful in the profession, learning about practical issues related to working in positions for which the student is prepared during the course of studies. The internship is to familiarize the student with professional language relevant to a specific industry and work culture. The rules for the organization of internships are set out in the Rector's ordinance. Detailed rules of apprenticeship taking into account the specifics of particular fields of study are set out in the field's of study apprenticeship regulations, in particular: learning outcomes assumed to be achieved by the student during the apprenticeship, framework apprenticeship program including a description of issues, dimension of apprenticeship (number of weeks of practice); form of internship (continuous, mid-year), criteria for choosing the place of internship, obligations of the student staying in the internship, obligations of the academic tutor, conditions for completing the internship by the student and conditions for exemption from the internship obligation in whole or in part. The number of ECTS and the number of hours are specified in the course structure.

Specialization: Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
General description of the specialization:
The specialization addresses people who want to gain interdisciplinary knowledge of the etiology, pathomechanisms, and symptoms of intellectual disabilities. Scientific knowledge and skills gained during professional practice provide the opportunity to learn the latest educational and therapeutic methods needed to monitor the educational and therapeutic process of children and adults with this type of disability. Students in the specialization of education and rehabilitation of individuals with intellectual disability acquire a wide range of theoretical knowledge and practical skills that enable them to carry out the diagnosis of individuals with intellectual disability, determine effective methods and techniques of therapeutic interventions towards them in the family, school, out-of-school environments; undertake activities related to programming, implementation of educational and rehabilitative interventions towards individuals with intellectual disability. Students learn about the latest trends in education, rehabilitation, and support of individuals with intellectual disability. Studying special education specializing in educating and rehabilitating individuals with intellectual disability shapes positive attitudes toward this group and develops the need to build such attitudes in society. After graduation, graduates will be prepared to work as a special education teacher in the field of education and rehabilitation of individuals with mild, moderate, severe, and profound intellectual disability in kindergartens and special schools, special education centers, kindergartens and mainstream schools with special departments, a special educator who conducts remedial classes with children and adolescents with profound intellectual disabilities, special educator - therapist in psychological and pedagogical clinics, rehabilitation centers and rehabilitation centers. Graduates will also be able to take up a job as a teacher co-organizing the process of inclusive education in mainstream kindergartens and schools, inclusive institutions, institutions with inclusive branches, and institutions implementing inclusive education.
