General characteristics of the field of study and the assumed concept of education:
Geology students learn about the structure of the Earth and the processes that led to the formation of our planet's current face, as well as how to use the Earth's resources per the principles of sustainable development. They learn to recognize minerals and rocks, fossils and mineral deposits, and techniques for identifying the structure of the Earth's interior. They understand what form of water exists on Earth and how to use it rationally, with future generations in mind. They learn about the interaction mechanisms between soil and structures and geological hazards. They confront theoretical knowledge with practice during almost 400 hours of field exercises. In addition to the most typical geological subjects, which enable students to start working after completing the first cycle of studies, the program includes a wide range of modules to choose from. In this way, students can develop their interests and specialize in selected areas of geology. The skills and competencies acquired during studies (including using computer programs used by geologists) allow, in combination with (optional but highly recommended) professional practice, to quickly obtain geological qualifications and start working on one's account. Small exercise groups allow for effective use of class time and maximum benefits. Academics are readily available and often introduce students to their research teams. We recommend that people interested in master's education continue their studies in the second cycle. It also gives you a pass to research work.
Graduation requirements:
The condition for admission to the diploma examination is to achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the study program, to obtain a certificate of an appropriate level of language proficiency in a foreign language and to obtain positive grades for the diploma dissertation. The condition for graduation is to pass the diploma examination with at least a satisfactory result. A graduate receives a higher education diploma confirming obtaining the qualifications of the appropriate degree. Detailed rules of the diploma process and the requirements for the diploma thesis are set out in the Rules and Regulations of Studies at the University of Silesia and the diploma regulations.
Internships (hours and conditions):
not applicable
Information on the relationship between the studies and the university's strategy as well as the socio-economic needs that determine the conduct of studies and the compliance of learning outcomes with these needs:
The geology major participates in the education of students of the College of Individual Interdisciplinary Studies, and elements of geology are included in the programs of several other majors. The teaching offer of the Geology major in the academic year 2024/2025 has been made more attractive and modernized in line with the current labour market demand. Cooperation with external stakeholders, such as business and economic entities and regional administration institutions, and constant contact with our graduates, who willingly employ younger colleagues, allows us to adapt the program to contemporary challenges in geology. The optional apprenticeships offered in geology increase the level of preparation of graduates to enter the labour market, shaping their entrepreneurial attitude and allowing them to gain the experience necessary to obtain geological qualifications. The geology field offers the opportunity to go abroad for scholarships under the ERASMUS programs and participate in the national student exchange program MOST. We also often host international exchange students, which allows us to make new friends and improve our language skills.
Percentage of the ECTS credits for each of the scientific or artistic disciplines to which the learning outcomes are related to the total number of ECTS credits: Earth and related environmental sciences (natural sciences): 100%
