Description:
Students familiarize themselves with the terminology used to describe syntax. They learn to identify components of a sentence and represent phrase structure in graphic form by means of tree diagrams. Simple sentence constituents and types of complex sentences are discussed. Correspondences between the form and meaning of sentences is demonstrated.

Written tests are conducted throughout the semester, as well as at the end of the semester. 5 – student has broad knowledge of the subject (which goes beyond the issues discussed during lectures and classes). Student fully understands issues discussed and can describe them in his/her own words (giving relevant examples). 4 – student has good knowledge of issues discussed during lectures and classes (which does not go beyond the material presented by the lecturer). 3 – student has sufficient knowledge of issues discussed during lectures and classes, but does not fully understands their complexity. 2 – student has poor knowledge of issues discussed during lectures and classes, s/he does not understand the issues discussed, and does not know linguistic terminology.
