Description:
The aim of the course is for students to gain knowledge in the field of art history ranging from prehistoric times to the end of the 19th century, taking into consideration the cultural context and historical processes, as well as to provide them with knowledge in the area of the history of artistic techniques and corresponding technologies. The lectures give a general overview of the aforementioned ideas and present a comprehensive outline of such phenomena as fashion, craft, aesthetic doctrines and theory of art in a particular period. What is chosen from the extensive imagescapes that the course encompasses are the phenomena of the highest artistic value and the most typical ones which offer an insight into the epoch's artistic idiom. The lectures are composed of several parts. They include a short summary of the period's chronology, its characteristic features, and an overview of attitudes and tendencies prevalent in it. Furthermore, they focus on a multifaceted analysis of particular instances, which, in accordance with the programme's requirements, cover the problem of space in both its objective dimension and the context of the era in which a given work was created. Among other components of a piece of art that will be examined are: its form, content, and their mutual relations, the impact of historical and cultural processes on the final shape of the work, individual expression, environmental determinants, and the relation of the artwork to the contemporary visual culture. The course, aside from providing students with the systematic knowledge of art history, serves several functions: it prepares them to understand the underlying principles governing artistic processes and their causative or accompanying phenomena; it equips them with the ability to recognise the stylistic and artistic value of a given work of art; finally, it allows them to make creative use of the acquired knowledge in their own field of study.
