The aim of the course is to further develop students’ academic writing skills with particular emphasis on techniques for working with secondary sources and on the methodology of conducting research in the humanities. The course focuses on the skills of finding, assessing the usefulness, and selection of source material as well as on correct referencing of sources. During the course, students analyse aspects of academic style and become acquainted with techniques useful in constructing a longer academic argument, especially a diploma paper, including the principles of logical argumentation, thesis evolution, and structuring arguments. Additionally, students become familiar with the most important aspects of conducting research, such as e.g. preparing literature review and defining research goals. These techniques are acquired and developed by students in the form of practical exercises integrated with the preparation of an individual diploma paper.
