Description: | Students practice specialized consecutive and community interpreting, in particular legal, medical and economic interpreting. The teacher discusses some problems of the certified translation/interpreting alongside the responsibilities assumed and parts played by the certified translator/interpreter with the use of illustrative recordings of community interpreting. The objective of this course is to broaden the knowledge and skills in students to interpret specialised texts. Students are familiarized with the structure of specialised texts. Students develop the ability to verify and revise specialised terminology and search for equivalents in the context of specialised translation. Students should also possess the knowledge of lexicographical resources and learn how to use and critically analyze parallel texts and accessible Internet sources (data banks, corpora etc.). Students must know how to employ adequate strategies and techniques in the context of consecutive interpreting. They should also be familiarized with the interpreter's workshop and specific features of consecutive interpreting. Practical classes take place in an interpreting lab. The course involves sight translation and consecutive interpreting practice. In interpreting classes students acquire and develop simultaneous and consecutive interpreting skills. They interpret a variety of texts including but not limited to newspaper and scholarly articles, commercial and literary texts, etc. Students interpret texts from Polish into English and from English into Polish. They work in class (individually, in pairs or in groups). The texts to interpret vary in terms of genre, subject matter and target readership.
