Description: | The course introduces students to the world of data bases and their application in the field of geosciences with emphasis on geology. Focus is placed on a good working knowledge of basics, especially input data file structure and how it is understood and visualized by geosciences software. Students participating in the course have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with geosciences data types, data sets, their static and dynamic interactions and with examples of software used in data management. |
Prerequisites: | The course is provided in English therefore students attending it should be able to understand written and spoken English. Students should be able to communicate their thoughts and ideas in English as the course has an interactive character and discussion is a vivid part of educational process. Additionally, those wishing to participate in the course should be familiar with computer usage; being familiar with Excel or Calc would be helpful for a student but it is not a mandatory condition. |

The major educational outcome of this course is a solid understating of what is a geosciences data base, the way it works and its purpose. Students understand the very basics of operation of data bases (including preparation of simple files) and a relationships between data sets and data visualization.
