Description:
The aim of the module is to increase written communication skills in the area of academic texts and prepare students for the process of writing their MA theses. The major aim of the module is to raise students' awareness of plagiarism, including unintentional plagiarism, and develop their academic writing skills (i.e. library search, referencing, paraphrasing and citing). Students practise the skills of plannning and composing selected academic genres in English. They also develop critical analysis of academic discourse. The classes focus on the following issues: 1. Definition of text types, genre and register. Main text and additional text. Text structure and its indcators. The role of headings and thematic sentences. 2. Definition of academic text and academic discourse community. Language community vs. academic text – cultural differences in the organization of academic discourse. 3. Selected elements of academic style (including differences between spoken and written language), in particular the use of pronouns, ”hedges”, passive constructions, lexical items, typical rhetorical devices, the issue of political correctness. Intensive stylistic exercises. 4. Plagiarism and compilation. Citation patterns. In-text citation, references, footnotes, and endnotes. Longer direct quotations and paraphrasing. The function of footnotes. Bibliography vs referencing. Exercises on paraphrasing and giving sources. 5. Academic essay (including citation and referencing) – competence building and skill development. 6. Summary – structure and function. 7. Review – structure and rhetorics; critical text analysis.
