Description:
The aim of the module is to equip students with knowledge of pedagogy that will help them understand the nature of educational processes at the stage of kindergarten and primary school (classes 1-8). The module also familiarises students with the role of upbringing and the role of environment in child development, the functioning of children in a peer group, and specific needs of kindergartners and primary school pupils. Further topics discussed during the course are: the role and functions of pedagogy in the present-day school, the role of schooling, an overview of educational theories, techniques of organizing schoolwork, pedagogy-related problems and their causes, and the role of individual differences. The module prepares students for their student practicum.

S/he can experiment and implement innovative solutions and define areas that need further improvement in the future. Student has basic knowledge about the selected theories on human behaviour, which provide background for educational studies. S/he has basic pedagogical and psychological knowledge that enables him/her to understand the teaching and learning processes at early education level. S/he is familiar with safety and hygiene regulations essential for educational instutitions. Student has knowledge about contemporary educational theories and various educational backgrounds; s/he knows the specific character of educational processes. S/he is familiar with reasons of learner's misbehaviour and knows some coping strategies that can be applied in a classroom. Student has basic knowledge about people participating in the teaching-learning process (i.e. students, their parents and teachers); has basic knowledge about the speciifc character of teaching students with special educational needs, including gifted learners; s/he knows how to communicate and act in an educational setting (perfoming didactic, educational and caring tasks; overcoming and dealing with protential problems successfully). Student knows basic issues concerning aims and didactic principles, methods and forms of teaching and audivisual aids used in the teaching-learning process.
