Module code: | 2GS-814 |
Programme code: | 04-S2GS19.2019 |
Semester: | summer semester 2020/2021 |
Language of instruction: | English |
Form of verification: | course work |
ECTS credits: | 2 |
Description: | The Mass extinctions in the Earth history module enables the student to recognize terminology and methodology within the interdisciplinary investigations of wide-scale ecosystem changes in the history of the Earth. Big mass extinctions, ecological catastrophes and biotic events are presented as natural element of the evolutionary history of the biosphere, and simultaneously as a key for understanding the future of life on our planet. |
Prerequisites: | Knowledge of the modules of Historical geology and stratigraphy, Physical geology, Facies analysis and Geochemistry. |
Key reading: | (no information given) |

---|---|
Know basic terminology and methods in event stratigraphy and interdisciplinary analyses of biodiversity in the fossil record. [04-GS-S2-814-1] |
2GS_W1 [1/5] |
Understand paleobiological, sedimentological and geochemical evidences of ecological catastrophes in the Earth history at different ecological scales, with special emphasis put on major extinctions (mass extinctions) in the context of their terrestrial and extraterrestrial determinants. [04-GS-S2-814-2] |
2GS_W1 [1/5] |
Can characterize the major five big extinctions of the Phanerozoic (end Ordovician, Late Devonian, end Permian, end Triassic and end Cretaceous) and know their stratigraphic record in the area of Poland, as well. [04-GS-S2-814-3] |
2GS_U1 [1/5] |
Can precisely formulate questions in order to deepen the understanding of the topic. [04-GS-S2-814-4] |
