Module code: | 2GS-522 |
Programme code: | 04-S2GS19.2019 |
Semester: | winter semester 2020/2021 |
Language of instruction: | Polish |
Form of verification: | course work |
ECTS credits: | 2 |
Description: | You will learn about a few key issues for the matter of energy, CO2 emission and environment.
What is energy? Why do we need it? What does it mean ”renewable energy source” (RES)? Why is the by-product of burning fossil fuels – increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere – an unwanted phenomena? How much of energy do we produce and consume in Poland and – more importantly – globally? What is the relation between our life quality and our energy consumption etc.
The course will teach you about how much energy we can produce with different types of renewable energy sources and how does it compare with our recent and potential future needs at the scale of town, city, country or our entire planet.
During the course we will put emphasis on geothermics, but you will learn also about other ”clean” renewable energy sources, including wind, waves, tides, solar energy e.t.c. The course will introduce briefly information on a biomass as one of the renewable energy sources with ”neutral CO2 emission” signature. General information on standard coal, oil, gas energy sources and nuclear power is also provided to complete the picture of energy sources that we have at our disposal. |
Prerequisites: | What do you need before start? The course is in English, therefore your written and spoken English must be sufficient to participate in the classes.
As a student attending the course you will need to have a working knowledge of physical geology, general geophysics and basic physics. You will need to be familiar with basics of regional geology of Poland. However, the most important for your success will be your curious attitude and willingness to learn. |
