The objective of lectures in the history of American literature is to make the first-year students familiar with American literary history since 17th century until the present. Against the background of the cultural history of America, the lectures focus upon the connectedness between canonical texts and writers whose contribution to the American letters were instrumental for the development of the literary history – and other phenomena and figures of note, central to the evolution of the American culture sensu largo. The lectures outline the succession and major characteristics of the dominant literary and cultural trends in the history of America and illustrate the above by references to canonical literary and paraliterary texts of each period.
