Description:
Students in conversation classes develop their capacity to speak English at levels B2 to C1, and improve their speaking fluency, correctness and accent. Students are also engaged in interactive exercises to improve their communicative competence. During the classes particular attention is also devoted to expansion of vocabulary, particularly that devoted to specific fields, and (in the course of thematically based lessons) to the development of cultural and linguistic knowledge in the students. Classes also place emphasis upon the correct interpretation of linguistic messaging and students should develop their ability to air their own views supported by general knowledge. During the course of the classes the instructor may introduce various topics that can help students to develop conversational skills by engaging their enthusiasm, and encourage the students to improve fluency in the course of developing their own interests.
Prerequisites:
Knowledge of English at level B2. Ability to find and utilize various sources of information (English-language websites, newspapers, journals, and other periodicals). Ability to make use of various dictionaries, lexicons and encyclopedias. Ability to work independently and in a group.

Students should prepare for classes by reading assigned Reading material and/or listening to assigned audio, and then should actively participate in the classroom activities. Students are assessed in a continuous manner on the basis of their participation – long or short oral responses, degree of participation and preparation for class.

Oral assessment [NX-S1PNJ1-KW-1_w_2]
The assessment for speaking skills May be made on the basis of a presentation by the student on a subject approved in advance by the instructor, and/or an oral response on a topic selected at random, and/or an oral description of a picture selected at random. The assessment may be made on the basis of an individual conversation between student and instructor, and/or conversation between students in pairs. During the assessment the student or students should express opinions and views related to the selected task. The student will receive a positive evaluation if he or she demonstrates language competence conforming to level B2/C1.

During the classes, the instructor makes use of various techniques to encourage students to take an active part in the classes: discussions, debates, games, presentations, essays, panel discussions, and individual and group exercises. Furthermore use is made of visual aids, both pictures and (to the extent suitable) objects, and authentic press articles, speeches, etc.; moreover multimedia sources are also used: films, songs, and audio recordings of debates and interviews.
