Description:
Culture of English speaking countries intends to familiarise the students with the issues concerning contemporary American culture, its specificity and directions in development. The issues discussed comprise: national and regional identity, the shaping of culture and theories of culture in different contexts, as well as representations of the USA in various texts of culture. Considerable emphasis is placed on the contemporary socio-cultural situation in the USA and on the evolving image of the USA during the last decade of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st century

The student is familiarised with basic aesthetic categories, he knows the features of communication codes from different subfields of art, for instance: from film, painting, he knows and recognises different trends in American art, their features and relation to American culture; he has some knowledge of historical processes of culture formation in various contexts, as well as of the influence of culture on American identity; he has organised knowledge of the most important historical and contemporary American trends in art and culture.
