Description:
The objective is to familiarize the students with the tools used in the description of language and of linguistic competences in native speakers. Classes in this semester focus on the description of the semantic and pragmatic components or, in the other option, on discourse analysis. In class, students learn about the mechanisms of realization of the semantic knowledge in the context of use. Students distinguish between meaning types, ranging from literal meanings, through contextualized explicatures to speaker-intented implicatures; separate propositions from non-truth conditional meanings. Students can identify elements such as, for example, lexical relations (synonymy, complementarity, antonymy, etc.), can recognize types of ambiguity (structural vs. lexical). In the course of discourse analysis class, students learn about the properties and types of discourse.

Written tests are held both during the course and on its completion. ‘Bardzo dobry’ (very good): student exhibits expansive knowledge of the subject (beyond the actual content of the lectures and classes). The student fully understands the phenomena discussed, is able to explain them in their own words (and with relevant examples). ‘Dobry’ (good): student exhibits good knowledge of hte phenomena discussed in lectures and in classes, but within the limits of what was presented in class. ‘Dostateczny’ (satisfactory): studnet exhibits satisfactory knowledge of phenomena discussed in lectures and in classes with limited understanding of their complexities. ‘Niedostateczny’ (unsatisfactory): studnet exhibits poor knowledge of phenomena discussed in classes and lectures, doesn’t understand them and doesn’t use proper linguistic terminology.
