Description: | The course aims at increasing communication proficiency in terms of academic writing, particularly with regard to students’ preparation for writing their diploma papers. The basic objective of the course is to make students aware of plagiarism, also unintended, as well as to deepen their knowledge when it comes to preparation of research queries, bibliographies, and citations. Students become fluent in academic writing. The following points are covered in detail:
1. The terms such as text, genre, and register. Main body and footnotes. Horizontal structure and its determinants. The role of headings and topic sentences. The idea of academic writing and discourse community. Language community and academic writing – cultural diversity in the organisation of academic texts.
2. Selected elements of academic style (differences between writing and speech), in particular, the problem of pronouns, hedges, the usage of passive voice, issues concerning lexis, typical figures of speech, and political correctness. Transitional structures in the text, enumerations, conjunctions, and other items that may signal relation between different parts of the text – stylistic exercises.
3. Plagiarism and compilation. Modes of citing. In-text and footnote quoting. Longer citations and paraphrase. The function of footnotes. Bibliography and the list of cited works. Exercises in paraphrase with all due sources.
4. Summary – structure and function.
5. Diagrams, tables, and graphs. Interpretation and description of data in the text.
6. Definition – its structure and role in academic texts.
