Description: | Introduction to Literary Studies is a survey of literary theories and methodologies since the beginning of the 20th century. Its focus is on trends, ideas and critical schools in England and America (e.g., New Criticism, Neo-Aristotelian School, mythographic studies) in the broad context of European theories and movements (hermeneutics, Russian Formalism, structuralism, literary semiotics, psychoanalytical theory and criticism, archetypal criticism, phenomenology, poststructuralism). Much emphasis is put on the interrelations of literary scholarship with other disciplines (philosophy, aesthetics, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, semiotics) and on the ideological foundations of some of the trends. The purpose of the course is not only to provide students with basic knowledge in literary theory, but also to develop their critical faculty in dealing with various cultural discourses. |
