Description: |
Elements of the knowledge about the languages of India and the changes in them, with special focus on modern standard hindi, its status quo and cultural context. The aim of the course is to develop students' knowledge about indo-aryan languages, with the special focus on grammatical categories characteristic for hindi/urdu. Students will also be familiarised with phonetics, morphology, semantics and syntax of those languages.
After finishing the module, students will have basic knowledge concerning linguistic theories and ability to use specialised language. They will be able able to analyse and explain linguistic structures, and moreover they will be characterised by knowledge concerning the typologies of the languages of India, historical development of indo-aryan languages (with special focus on sanskrit, hindi and urdu) and their connection with indo-european languages such as greek or latin. They will also be aware of the fact that the Indian linguistic traditions affected modern linguistics. |
