General characteristics of the field of study and the assumed concept of education:
The education in the Cultural Studies bachelor's degree is delivered through three pathways: 1) ‘I experience’ – we offer subjects that give our students the opportunity to come into contact with artistic, film, literary, media and theatre culture, as well as with the cultural heritage of the region, the country and the world. Together we reflect on their significance and role in the surrounding reality; 2) ‘I get to know’ – this is the most comprehensive block of classes in which students acquire, deepen and organise their knowledge and improve their skills in analysing and interpreting various texts and cultural phenomena needed to understand the reality around them; 3) ‘I act’ – this pathway is of a practical nature; within it, students not only learn about the behind-the-scenes functioning and financing of cultural and related institutions, but also take part in workshops on cultural animation, learning how to organise events and raise funds for their implementation. Cultural Studies is an all-academic programme that emphasises learning, experiencing and acting in the field of culture. Students take courses in such areas as film, art, theatre, media and intercultural communication, the cultural heritage of Europe and the world, and literature. They acquire an extensive knowledge of the individual cultural fields and the skills to be able to move skilfully within each of them. The competences thus acquired can provide students with a starting point for practical activities (organisation of events in the cultural sector, cultural animation, cultural education). Consequently, some of the classes can be carried out outside the space of the University – in museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas and other places. The study programme also includes compulsory internships – we try to ensure that our students carry them out where their knowledge could find the fullest application. The programme concludes with the preparation – depending on the student's decision – of a standard bachelor's thesis or a bachelor's project aimed at using the skills acquired during the studies to disseminate and popularise culture and knowledge about it.
Graduation requirements:
The condition for admission to the diploma examination is to achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the study program, to obtain a certificate of an appropriate level of language proficiency in a foreign language and to obtain positive grades for the diploma dissertation. A graduate receives a higher education diploma confirming obtaining the qualifications of the appropriate degree. Internships (hours and conditions):
Internships are an integral part of the study program, carried out by students in individual fields, levels, profiles and forms of study. Internships are to help in confronting the knowledge acquired during studies with the requirements of the labour market, acquiring skills useful in the profession, learning about practical issues related to working in positions for which the student is prepared during the course of studies. The internship is to familiarize the student with professional language relevant to a specific industry and work culture. The rules for the organization of internships are set out in the Rector's ordinance. Detailed rules of apprenticeship taking into account the specifics of particular fields of study are set out in the field's of study apprenticeship regulations, in particular: learning outcomes assumed to be achieved by the student during the apprenticeship, framework apprenticeship program including a description of issues, dimension of apprenticeship (number of weeks of practice); form of internship (continuous, mid-year), criteria for choosing the place of internship, obligations of the student staying in the internship, obligations of the academic tutor, conditions for completing the internship by the student and conditions for exemption from the internship obligation in whole or in part. The number of ECTS and the number of hours are specified in the course structure.
Information on the relationship between the studies and the university's strategy as well as the socio-economic needs that determine the conduct of studies and the compliance of learning outcomes with these needs:
Cultural Studies is a programme that implements the strategy of the University of Silesia in Katowice. We offer our students professional knowledge, building creative attitudes and shaping a sense of responsibility for Polish culture. We enable the individualisation of study programmes and support student mobility through contacts with universities in the country and abroad. Students participate in the life of the University through multidirectional scientific, cultural and artistic activities. High-quality education responds to the socio-economic needs of a globalising world, especially with regard to the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage (regional, national, European...), cultural education and the development of cultural life (including artistic, film, literary and theatrical life). We train specialists in the protection of cultural heritage (including regional heritage), educators and cultural animators.
