Holders of a master's degree in geography meet the conditions for obtaining authorizations in the field of forecasting, programming, designing and planning changes in the natural and socio-economic environment. In addition, geographers studying at our center know and understand the specifics of the human-environment relationship in areas subject to strong anthropopressure and are prepared to solve difficult environmental problems in mining, industrial and highly urbanized areas.
The study program includes specialized geographical subjects, humanities subjects to choose from and a block of pedagogical subjects (to choose from) entitling students to work as teachers. An integral part of the studies are field exercises held during the summer months. The second-cycle study program includes geographical and related subjects closely related to the chosen specialization. In the master's degree program in geography, graduates of bachelor's studies in teaching specialization who continue their studies in geography, after passing the subjects of pedagogical and didactic preparation and pedagogical practice in a secondary school, obtain the qualifications to teach geography in secondary schools, in accordance with the applicable regulations. |

Information on the relationship between the studies and the university's strategy as well as the socio-economic needs that determine the conduct of studies and the compliance of learning outcomes with these needs: | The priority task of the geography major, in line with the mission of the University of Silesia in the field of modern education, is to offer specializations that meet the current needs of the labor market. The study program is constantly modernized and adapted to the changing socio-economic realities, which makes the educational offer attractive and up-to-date. The geography major at the University of Silesia in Katowice harmonizes with the strategic goals of the university, focusing on research supporting the sustainable development and transformation of the region, especially in the context of its post-industrial character. As an interdisciplinary discipline, geography promotes scientific cooperation and implements the assumptions of the university's innovation, including through the use of modern geoinformation technologies (GIS). Conducting geographical studies results from real socio-economic needs. The Silesian region and the whole of Poland require specialists prepared to manage the transformation of post-industrial areas, environmental protection in the context of climate change, rational spatial planning and analysis of spatial data, which are of increasing importance in many sectors of the economy. There is also a clear increase in the demand for experts able to meet demographic challenges and develop sustainable tourism. |

General description of the specialization: | Hydrology and water management offers specialist knowledge on the processes occurring in the hydrosphere, as well as mechanisms and principles of water management on a local, regional and supra-regional scale. They obtain detailed information on hydrological processes characteristic of: streams (rivers, streams, ditches, canals), groundwater, springs, lakes, wetlands, glaciers, seas and oceans. An important aspect of education is current knowledge on the structure of the water balance of various ranks of territorial units, including the river basins of the main rivers of Poland, Europe and the world. Education is focused on the possibilities of water use, and especially the functioning of water management (e.g. water supply, sewage disposal, protection against floods and droughts, quantitative and qualitative changes in water conditions, protection of water resources). In addition to the global dimension of hydrological issues, some classes refer to specific regional problems of the Silesian Voivodeship and the Katowice conurbation. They mainly concern quantitative and qualitative changes in water in urban areas, as well as methods of counteracting the degradation of aquatic ecosystems, e.g. renaturation of rivers, reclamation of lakes and reservoirs, protection of surface and underground waters, retention adaptation of river basins. Graduates of the hydrology and water management specialization have the knowledge, skills and social competences required for employment in institutions of various levels of state and local government administration and production or service facilities. They have professional preparation to perform functions and carry out tasks in: hydrometeorological services (e.g. Institute of Meteorology and Water Management), institutions managing water and water management (e.g. National Water Management Board, Regional Water Management Boards, Voivodeship Boards of Land Reclamation and Water Facilities, water and sewage companies), environmental protection services (e.g. State Inspectorate for Environmental Protection), administration of protected areas (e.g. national and landscape parks), government and local government administration at various levels (e.g. in environmental protection departments, planning and development departments, municipal economy departments), among others as experts in the construction of important facilities exposed to extreme hydrological phenomena and in companies conducting international operations as advisors on the hydrological conditions of individual countries of the world. Graduates of the specialization are also prepared to run their own business in the scope of preparing studies and expert opinions in the field of hydrology and water management (e.g. water-legal reports, specialist opinions, maps and plans) and broadly understood water use (e.g. water treatment, hydropower, fish farming and other aquatic organisms, sewage treatment, raw material extraction, water transport, tourism and recreation). Within the specialization "hydrology and water management" the student chooses one of two proposed specializations. |

General description of the specialization: | The Landscape Change Monitoring specialization is related to the growing demand for rational management of landscape resources. In response to the new landscape policy, a specialization was created, which aims to educate specialists in the field of landscape shaping and monitoring. Studies in this specialization equip graduates of geographical studies with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, currently required on the labor market. Graduates will acquire skills in the identification and assessment of current landscapes, registration and mapping of their changes, historical and physiognomic analysis, and preparation of short- and long-term landscape forecasts based on modern GIS tools. The didactic background consists of a landscape reading station, which is the first facility of this type in Poland, and a landscape laboratory equipped with modern equipment and software, enabling analysis using GIS methods. An interdisciplinary approach and a diverse curriculum ensure that specialists are prepared to work in spatial planning offices, local government units in units dealing with landscape management, spatial planning, or landscape education, as well as in private enterprises with a similar profile. Particular attention will be paid to the issue of preparing a landscape audit and studies prepared for the needs of protection plans in landscape or national parks. Graduates will also be educated in the direction of preparing and implementing projects for the protection of the landscape and its resources. |
