General characteristics of the field of study and the assumed concept of education:
Students of applied geology acquire thorough geological education along with engineering competencies, allowing them to cooperate closely with the socio-economic environment. According to information obtained from external stakeholders, there is currently a demand for well-educated geologists, which should remain the same in the coming years. In addition to classic issues such as the structure of the Earth, the processes that led to the formation of the current face of our planet, recognizing minerals, rocks and fossils, Earth's resources and their use by the principles of sustainable development, students learn in what form water occurs on Earth, what are the limitations of its resources and how to use it rationally. They understand the interaction mechanisms between the soil and the structure, working closely with construction engineers. They learn to recognize geological threats and prevent them. The most significant emphasis is learning techniques for identifying the structure of the Earth's interior, exploiting minerals, and learning the cycles of element circulation. They gain the necessary foundation in basic sciences (physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics), allowing them to solve even complex engineering tasks. They confront theoretical knowledge with practice during almost 400 hours of field exercises. The applicable geological subjects enable students to take up professional work after completing the first cycle of studies. In addition, the program includes a wide range of modules to choose from. In this way, students can develop their interests and specialize in selected areas of applied geology. Geomaterials, air pollution mineralogy, planetary geology, engineering hydrogeology, and applied geophysics are just some of the issues in which a geological engineer can expand his skills. The skills acquired during studies (including using computer programs used by geologists), combined with (optional but highly recommended) professional practice, allow you to obtain geological qualifications and start working on your account quickly. Small exercise groups allow for effective use of class time and maximum benefits. Academics are readily available and often introduce students to their research teams. We recommend that people interested in master's education continue their studies in the second cycle. It also gives you a pass to research work.
Graduation requirements:
The condition for admission to the diploma examination is to achieve the learning outcomes provided for in the study program, to obtain a certificate of an appropriate level of language proficiency in a foreign language and to obtain positive grades for the diploma dissertation. The condition for graduation is to pass the diploma examination with at least a satisfactory result. A graduate receives a higher education diploma confirming obtaining the qualifications of the appropriate degree. Detailed rules of the diploma process and the requirements for the diploma thesis are set out in the Rules and Regulations of Studies at the University of Silesia and the diploma regulations.
Internships (hours and conditions):
not applicable
Information on the relationship between the studies and the university's strategy as well as the socio-economic needs that determine the conduct of studies and the compliance of learning outcomes with these needs:
The field of applied geology participates in the education of the College of Individual Interdisciplinary Studies students. Applied geology in the academic year 2024/2025 has been made more attractive and modernized in line with the current labour market demand. Cooperation with external stakeholders, such as business and economic entities and regional administration institutions, and constant contact with our graduates, who willingly employ younger colleagues, allows us to adapt the program to contemporary challenges in geology. The optional apprenticeships offered in the field of applied geology are a way of improving graduates' engineering competencies, allowing them to enter the labour market smoothly. They also teach entrepreneurial attitudes and will give you the experience necessary to obtain geological qualifications. The field of applied geology offers the opportunity to go abroad for scholarships under the ERASMUS programs and participate in the national student exchange program MOST. We also often host international exchange students, which allows us to make new friends and improve our language skills.
Percentage of the ECTS credits for each of the scientific or artistic disciplines to which the learning outcomes are related to the total number of ECTS credits: Earth and related environmental sciences (natural sciences): 100%
