General characteristics of the field of study and the assumed concept of education: | The study program in the field of ethnology and cultural anthropology implements scientific assumptions in both theoretical and applied dimensions. One of the important goals of education in this field is to prepare a graduate who is able to perceive and understand the cultural background of every social situation in research work and practice. In this way, students acquire the ability to analyze the structures and functioning of societies from traditional to informational, including the mechanisms accompanying globalization and characterizing multicultural communities in the era of postmodernity. This is correlated with systematically conducted ethnographic field explorations in cultural areas in the country and beyond its borders, thanks to which the studies gain practical value, providing students with workshop and methodological knowledge. Emphasis was placed on the key issues in the contemporary realities of the European community, multiculturalism and social identity on cultural and ethnic borders. The need to protect and disseminate the cultural heritage of the region, country, Europe, and the world was taken into account to a measurable extent.
In the concept of studies, special attention was paid to the principle of innovation and creativity by introducing content from the field of marketing in culture and knowledge regarding the practical possibilities of applying ethnology and cultural anthropology in pursuing a professional career, not only in the work of an ethnologist and cultural anthropologist, but also in other fields (e.g. in business, journalism, education, tourism). This is achieved by acquiring specialist knowledge and competences through a range of classes conducted in cooperation with experts, especially with representatives of the creative sector and local government and culture-forming institutions. An important and inseparable element of modern times is the media (especially the so-called new media), which play a significant role in every sphere of life, in a powerful way co-creating public opinion and shaping the cultural awareness of individuals and societies. Hence, the curriculum includes modules on the specifics of the Internet, social media, gaming and e-sports.
With the participation of external stakeholders, who are potential employers for graduates of the course, consultations are conducted on the formation of the concept of studies and adapting the curriculum to their expectations and the requirements of the labor market; in particular, taking into account creative industries conducting business activities related to culture and technology. Cooperation based on partnership and intensively developed contacts of academic and teaching staff and students of the major with local government units (municipal and district), non-governmental organizations (associations, foundations) and cultural and educational institutions of various types (museums, schools, cultural centers, public libraries, regional chambers) in the country and abroad, is also a platform for communication with the local and regional community. As part of coordinated, bilateral contacts, team research work of students is organized, during which topics are implemented in line with the needs of local communities, including local government agencies. This releases the creative potential of employees and students, creating the best possible conditions for studying and conducting scientific research, openness to the needs of the University and external units cooperating with it. The areas of activity in the field of study are implemented in the sphere of tolerance, modernity and innovation, which is expressed, among others, in shaping pro-social attitudes among students that have a noticeable impact on the broadly understood socio-economic environment.

The concept of first-cycle studies in the field of study takes into account the principle of interdisciplinarity. Students acquire in-depth ethnological and anthropological knowledge about the functioning of culture, also taking into account the perspective of related sciences. During the studies, students study and describe the diversity of human behaviors, taking into account the historical, geographical, social, economic, political, religious, etc. context. The education program, thanks to innovative and novel elements, allows for understanding many socio-cultural phenomena that are key to the present day, including migration processes, globalization mechanisms, the consequences of international and intercultural contacts, cooperation on borderlands. During the studies, knowledge is provided about the cultural heritage of Poland and Europe, the Global South (especially South America) and the functioning of broadly understood minority cultures. The student gains skills related to researching, interpreting and explaining current socio-cultural phenomena, including various lifestyles, migration processes, cultural gender and sexuality, the phenomenon of power. The course allows you to develop various interests related to, among others, contemporary folklore, cultural ecology and virtual reality.
As already mentioned, the practical value is important in the education program, an element of which is ethnographic field research conducted throughout the entire teaching process. Students improve their research skills during team field trips under the supervision of research and teaching staff (120 hours) and individual professional internships in various types of cultural institutions (60 hours). They become familiar with the specifics of work in a specific institution, acquire specific professional skills and social competences through activities carried out in cooperation with local government, cultural and educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, or enterprises, where they have the opportunity to prepare and implement a specific project. Knowledge of the legal and financial possibilities of action, duties and tasks facing employees of a given institution depends on the profile of the institution chosen by the students. Implementation of professional internships also helps to find out about the possibilities of using the acquired knowledge in planning an individual career path. Both classes in the classic form and research stays inspire further scientific exploration. Students have the opportunity to carry out research projects as part of selected didactic classes or the activities of the Ethnologists' Scientific Club and other student clubs.
Some classes in the major take the form of workshops, thanks to which the student learns about the specifics of the research work of an ethnologist and cultural anthropologist (e.g. "Research workshop", "Basics of scientific workshop", "Archive of the Polish Ethnographic Atlas"), gains the opportunity to look at socio-cultural processes and phenomena in a broader perspective, and acquires competences that enable the use of this knowledge in professional work, e.g. in education, culture, journalism, business, the creative sector, uniformed services (including as part of the modules "Ethnologist on the labor market", "Marketing in culture", "Travel reportage"). The module "Ethnologist on the job market" presents students with various possibilities of realizing professional work, therefore potential employers are invited to classes (so far, representatives of the Employment Agency ATERIMA, the Association of Art and Artistic Education, the Arts Foundation, Folkaround, the Myślenice Culture and Sports Center, the Beskid Museum in Wisła, the History Museum of the City of Katowice have been invited).
An important part of the implemented curriculum are four extensive semester modules devoted to new media (consulted with representatives of the video game industry), which include theoretical classes on virtual reality and cyberspace and expert workshops conducted by external companies. They supplement the knowledge of students on the organization and functioning of e-sports events and multimedia events from an anthropological perspective.
Students can also improve their language skills by participating not only in mandatory language classes, but also in classes included in the curriculum conducted in English by faculty members (e.g. "The Anthropology of Global South", "Anthropology of Migration", "Minority Cultures") and/or visiting professors from abroad.
Research and teaching staff, seeing the need to seek new ways of teaching, the aim of which is to increase the effectiveness of education, refer to diverse teaching methods, including creative activity, group projects and cooperation with the environment. A characteristic feature in this respect is the pursuit of systematic increase in cognitive independence, supported, among others, by enabling students to freely determine their individual education path by choosing optional education modules (within the so-called area and university-wide modules). During the pandemic, high quality of academic teaching was ensured thanks to professionally implemented remote education. The experience gained in this area gave lecturers the opportunity to improve their methods of working with people studying "at a distance" and to expand their teaching skills, which allows, depending on the need, to implement selected teaching content remotely. This is a component of intensively undertaken activities aimed at improving and streamlining innovative, modern forms of education and the teaching offer. It is also directly related to adapting the conditions of education to the needs of students with disabilities.
The prepared curriculum for the field of ethnology and cultural anthropology takes into account innovative and innovative issues, constituting a response to the expectations of the local and regional socio-economic environment:
1. cultural ecology, the subject of which is the study and analysis of man and his culture, as an element of ecological balance in the natural and social environment. This subject is in line with the latest trends in science and results from the need to develop specific ways of man's existence in nature, his planetary existence. The problem of ecology appears in this context not only as a sphere of important activities, but also as an incentive for in-depth anthropological reflection, reinterpretation of basic concepts about man and the non-human world, his relationship to nature. The ethnologist/cultural anthropologist appears here as an observer and analyst of cultural and social changes that take place under the influence of factors accompanying cultural innovation related to the creation and functioning of technical civilization and modern culture. The simultaneous development of culture with the simultaneous degradation of the existing space in the material-functional, cultural and social spheres, requires creative adaptation to new environmental conditions, and thus the creation of the necessary ecological niche and appropriate culture-forming factors,
2. borderland understood in many aspects in various civilization circles, in accordance with the research interests of the faculty employees covering, for example, Poland, the Balkans and the Global South,
3. cultural heritage in the creative sector - e.g. classes in the form of interdisciplinary projects with students of the Academy of Fine Arts, cultural institutions dealing with design, designers, craftsmen taking into account innovative work methods, including design thinking (e.g. the module "Ethnologist on the labor market", "UX Research").
4. accessibility management in cultural institutions - the module "Accessibility of cultural institutions" takes into account the issues of legal, cultural and awareness changes taking place in social reality. It acquaints students not only with legal acts regulating the accessibility of public entities, including cultural institutions, but also with the socio-cultural consequences they cause. Considering these phenomena in an anthropological context allows students not only to learn about the causes of the discussed phenomena, understand their consequences, but also predict their consequences and propose further actions. This module equips students not only with specialist knowledge, but also with practical skills and soft skills needed to work in a diverse and open/inclusive environment.
The curriculum for the Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology major takes into account the potential of the Faculty of Arts and Educational Sciences. The location on the Polish-Czech border favors permanent intercultural contacts and international cooperation, inspiring attitudes of openness and tolerance. Modern teaching infrastructure is available for the needs of education in the major. Classes are held in rooms equipped with audiovisual equipment that meets modern standards and allows for the implementation of the content assumed in the curriculum. The resources of the course include unique collections of the Polish Ethnographic Atlas, a specialist course library and a collection of artifacts of the indigenous people of Canada and Sudan. The course is mostly made up of assistant professors and independent employees (including university professors) who constantly improve their professional qualifications (workshop training and courses), which significantly affects the quality of education |

Information on the relationship between the studies and the university's strategy as well as the socio-economic needs that determine the conduct of studies and the compliance of learning outcomes with these needs: | The developed study program is consistent with the university's strategy and responds to socio-economic needs in several binding aspects.
The planned study program refers to the four Priority Research Areas of the University specified in the UŚ Development Strategy (Harmonious human development, Modern materials and technologies and their socio-cultural implications, Environmental and climate change together with the accompanying social challenges, Humanities for the future), covering the following research topics: cultural ecology, borderlands understood in many aspects in various civilization circles, cultural heritage in the creative sector and accessibility management in cultural institutions. The research scope correlates with the scientific activity of the ethnologists and cultural anthropologists, and thus combines the potential of research with teaching.
The ongoing analysis of socio-economic conditions indicating the need to adapt the study program and the assumed learning outcomes takes into account the dynamic, changing labor market. The modification took into account the expectations/proposals for changes coming from internal stakeholders (students, PhD students and faculty staff), external stakeholders (including potential employers), as well as the general concept of changes to the curricula proposed by the University of Silesia in Katowice. The main postulate concerning the increase in the number of practical classes was implemented by profiling numerous modules of classes in such a way that they familiarized students with examples of so-called good practices or interacted with representatives of external stakeholders from various economic and cultural environments. Additionally, the study program was modified in terms of adapting the curriculum to the socio-economic needs and expectations of the labor market of the industry related to creative sectors (cultural heritage, video games, e-sport, multimedia), which was possible thanks to participation in the POWER project. Within the framework of 15 hours of consultations, four modules were developed, called "New media", which will prepare students to enter the labor market. It was proposed to expand their competences in the areas of creating and maintaining a gaming community, managing an online community, studying the needs of video game users, running live e-sports games, and developing a computer game plot.
Practical values, including developing the ability to use tools in qualitative and quantitative research, are conducted and improved throughout the teaching process. Students improve their research skills during team field trips and individual internships in various cultural institutions. They can also develop their skills in implementing research projects as part of selected didactic classes, the activities of the Ethnologists' Scientific Club and other student clubs. Students can also increase their language competences by participating not only in mandatory language classes, but also in classes included in the curriculum conducted in English by faculty staff and/or visiting professors from abroad.
A graduate of professional studies in ethnology and cultural anthropology should, in accordance with the expectations of potential employers, be equipped with an appropriate set of competencies that will prepare him or her for the current needs of the labor market. In accordance with the principle of innovation and creativity, the curriculum has been enriched with content from the broadly understood field of knowledge about local/regional and global culture, marketing in culture, qualitative research and knowledge about the practical possibilities of applying ethnology and cultural anthropology in pursuing a career, both in the work of an ethnologist and cultural anthropologist and in other fields (e.g. education, journalism, the creative sector, business, public opinion research centers, uniformed services).
By combining scientific assumptions in the study program in both the theoretical and applied dimensions, we prepare the graduate for the socio-economic needs of the environment of which he or she is a part. |

The study program allows you to understand migration processes, globalization mechanisms, the importance of international and intercultural contacts, cooperation on borderlands and many other socio-cultural phenomena that are important today. During the studies, we provide knowledge about the cultural heritage of Poland and Europe, the Global South (especially South America) and minority cultures. We are the only ones in Poland to have unique collections of the Polish Ethnographic Atlas, which we gradually digitize, also using them in teaching. You will gain skills related to researching and interpreting current social and cultural phenomena (e.g. how to survive in an African city, what gaming and e-sport mean to modern people, what the terms ethnodesign and ecotourism mean). You can develop your interests related to, among others, contemporary folklore, cultural ecology or virtual reality.
First-cycle (professional) studies in the field of ethnology and cultural anthropology last 6 semesters and are conducted in a full-time form.
The language of instruction is Polish (some modules are also conducted in English).
Graduates of the field of study most often find employment in various institutions promoting culture (e.g. museums, cultural centers, regional institutions and associations). Ethnology and cultural anthropology is a course that will help you expand your knowledge of the world. Classes cover rich topics related to cultures that significantly influence the understanding of modernity.
Studying with us gives you the opportunity to develop your interests related to, for example, contemporary folklore, virtual reality, anthropology of gender and sexuality, anthropology of power or cultural ecology. In fact, during each semester you will have a rich offer of classes that address topics related to the diversity of cultures in a variety of ways.
Importantly, with us, not only theory, but also practice! During your studies, you will take part in ethnographic field studies, as well as workshops that will introduce you to the specifics of the research work of an ethnologist and cultural anthropologist. You will also improve your skills during extremely interesting team field trips, as well as individual internships in various institutions. What's more, you have the opportunity to carry out numerous research projects, join scientific circles, and present the results of your work, among others, at scientific conferences in Poland and abroad or publish them in specialist journals. The competences you gain will be useful in your future professional work!
Studying in our field, you will gain ethnological and anthropological knowledge about the functioning of culture, also taking into account the perspective of other sciences.
Some of them work in companies and participate in the implementation of development programs, others develop their scientific passions as part of the Doctoral School or run activities in the creative sector, business, education or tourism. Some of them have achieved considerable success in popularizing folklore and cultural heritage, receiving numerous awards and distinctions. The following people are among the special graduates of the course: Paulina Adamska (president of the "Serfenta" association, instructor), Judyta Bąk (ethnologist and forensic archaeologist, implementer of many educational projects), Radosław Biel (traveler, entrepreneur in the creative sector), Karolina Kania (researcher, traveler), Anna Malacina-Karpiel (folk singer), Bartłomiej Koszarek (regionalist and musician), Anna Nędza-Kubiniec (well-known regionalist and embroidery expert), Agata Siemaszko (folk singer), Magdalena Toboła-Feliks (popularizer of knowledge about Silesian folk costume, PhD student at the University of Silesia, works at the Silesian Museum). | ||||
