Description: | This is an elective course: students may choose between (1) “Introduction to lexicography” and (2) “Introduction to Corpus Linguistics”. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic concepts of lexicography, such as typology of dictionaries, the use of dictionaries, collection and selection of material, lexicographic presentation of headwords, definitions in monolingual dictionaries, equivalence in bilingual dictionaries, etymology, electronic dictionaries and the use of dictionaries in translation. The aim of the course is also to acquaint students with language corpora and their application in linguistics. In the case when (1) “Introduction to Lexicography” is chosen by students, more attention will be devoted to lexicographic issues, whereas when (2) “Introduction to Corpus Linguistics” is chosen, more time will be devoted to practical exercises (with the use of computers) connected with selected English and Polish corpora (e.g. BNC, COCA, COHA, NOW, Google Ngram, NKJP). |
