Description:
The course aims at increasing students’ communicative proficiency in the area of academic writing, with special emphasis on preparation for writing diploma papers. It sensitises students to the problem of plagiarism, including unintended plagiarism, and familiarises them with research queries, rules of bibliographic description, and citation formats. Students work towards fluency in academic writing. The problems covered include: 1. The concepts of text type, genre, and register. Academic writing and discourse community. 2. Selected elements of academic style (including the differences between speech and writing). 3. Plagiarism and compilation. Types of citation. Longer quotations and paraphrase. The function of footnotes. 4. Summary – the structure and function. 5. Diagrams, tables, and graphs. Interpretation and discussion of data in the text. 6. Definition – its structure and role in academic texts.
