Description:
Specialized English in Chemistry is a one-semester (60h) course for the third-year undergraduate students of Chemical Technology. The main goal of the course is to introduce, enhance, and master specialized vocabulary used in chemistry, chemical technology and related fields, to facilitate the process of translating and understanding original English chemical literature, to prepare solid foundations for using proper, technical English in the future professional careers. In class students read, translate and analyze chemical texts provided by the lecturer. The chemical content of the texts is rather basic, the language proficiency required varies from pre-intermediate to upper intermediate, or even advanced. Students also watch short videos on laboratory techniques. This gives them opportunity to listen to native speaker instructors teaching general laboratory techniques to undergraduate students. At all times students are strongly encouraged to speak, formulate , present and discuss their opinions on various current topics related to chemistry, like the quality and protection of water resources, global changes of the climate etc. Final grades are based on the scores of the final written test administered at the last week of the semester and, in addition, in-class activity of the students.
