Module code: | 1BT_24 |
Programme code: | 01-S1BT12.2019 |
Semester: | summer semester 2020/2021 |
Language of instruction: | Polish |
Form of verification: | exam |
ECTS credits: | 5 |
Description: | Module gets across the knowledge regarding elementary methods used in the biotechnology of microorganisms and plants as well as recognizes advantages and threats connected with them. Module defines basic methodology of in vitro culture processing and genetic transformation of plants, demonstrates screening and application of genetically modified and unmodified microorganisms in the processes of biomaterials syntheses, synthesis of primary and secondary metabolites, remediation of polluted environments, biological methods of energy production and implementation of environment-friendly technologies. Laboratory classes present basic biotechnological techniques including synthesis of primary and secondary metabolites in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, use of immobilized cells and enzymes, genetic transformation of plants and analysis of transgenic plants. Laboratory shows possibilities of application of biotechnology basic studies as well as in food industry, agriculture, environmental protection and other branches of industry. Student through self-conducted experiments learns laboratory know-how, principles of work with transgenetic material and ksenobiotics, as well as recognizes threats and collects empirical knowledge for analyses and interpretation of results. |
Prerequisites: | Knowledge and skills in biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and plant physiology at the level of bachelors. |
Key reading: | see syllabus compulsory reading |
