Description:
Students familiarize themselves with the terminology used to describe syntax. They learn to identify components of a sentence and represent phrase structure in graphic form by means of tree diagrams. Simple sentence constituents and types of complex sentences are discussed. Correspondences between the form and meaning of sentences is demonstrated.

Written tests are administered in the course of a semester, as well as at its close. Grade bdb (5) – the student demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the subject (going beyond the issues discussed in lectures or classes / tutorials). The student fully understands the issues in question, can define them in his/her own words and provide relevant examples. Grade db (4) – the student demonstrates a solid knowledge of the issues discussed in lecture and in class / tutorial (not going beyond the issues discussed in lectures or classes) Grade dst (3) – the student demonstrates a sufficient knowledge of the issues discussed in lecture and class / tutorial, but is unable to elaborate on them. Grade ndst (2) - the student demonstrates a poor knowledge of the issues discussed in lecture and class / tutorial, does not understand the complexity of the subject and does not know the required linguistic terminology.
