Purpose and description of the content of education: | The goal of the module is to provide students with knowledge, skills and competences in understanding the origins, significance, and impact of the main trends of political and legal thought in the Western cultural circle, in particular the most significant political and legal doctrines and their impact on the theory and practice of the modern state and law. The module discusses all basic doctrines of political, social, economic and legal character presenting visions of the functioning of the state and law starting from the ancient times and ending with the present day. The module allows the student to become acquainted with the output of outstanding thinkers of all periods (e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli or Monteskius), as well as to obtain comprehensive information on the most important political positions (e.g. conservatism, liberalism, socialism) and legal schools (e.g. the school of natural law, the historical school of jurisprudence, legal positivism).
The module introduces the basic information on political and legal doctrines, in particular:
- ancient political and legal doctrines
- the doctrines of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance
- the rise of the Age of Enlightenment in the history of political and legal thought
- the rise of modern trends in political thought
- contemporary political, social and economic thought
- disputes about the essence of law throughout history
Students will not only obtain a picture of the political and legal thought of a given era, but will also be able to follow the evolution of individual concepts and ideologies throughout history. |
