Purpose and description of the content of education:
Nazwa modułu wskazuje na jego zadanie: wprowadzenie studenta w zakres refleksji nad rudymentarnymi zagadnieniami związanymi z samym pojęciem kultury i jej „utalentowanego dziecka” zwanego sztuką. Studenci poznają w zarysie główne zręby wybranych – spośród wielu – teorii kultury. Przedmiotem zajęć jest zasadniczo kultura Zachodu, jakkolwiek zestawiona w kontrapunkcie z innością reprezentowaną przez kulturowo-cywilizacyjną tradycję Wschodu. Program modułu obejmuje omówienie wewnętrznego zróżnicowania źródeł kultury zachodniej, następnie punktów zwrotnych czy też przełomów w jej dziejach, wreszcie proponuje wybór tematów z zakresu zjawisk występujących w kulturze współczesnej. Sztuka w jej zróżnicowanych przejawach stanowi tu rodzaj zwierciadła, w którym przegląda się i bada swoje oblicze kultura danego okresu. W dziełach sztuki bowiem streszcza się kultura, która je spłodziła. Najlepszymi przewodnikami po jej zmiennych epokach są postacie poczęte w głowach i sercach artystów i zasługujące na swe angielskie miano culture heroes; bohaterowie kultury reprezentujący szerokie spektrum postaw, począwszy od starożytnego ujęcia człowieczego losu w micie i tragedii (przykładowo: Prometeusz, Edyp, Antygona), a skończywszy na mitologii nowożytnego indywidualizmu (przykładowo: Hamlet, Don Juan, Faust).
