Module name: Biophysics of Proteins and Cellular Membranes
Module code: W4-BF-FA-S1-4-23-28
Programme code: W4-S1BF19.2025
Semester: summer semester 2026/2027
Language of instruction: Polish
Form of verification: exam
ECTS credits: 4
Purpose and description of the content of education:
The Biophysics of Proteins and Cellular Membranes module aims to deepen students' knowledge of the properties and role of proteins in the context of organismal function and cell signalling. Students learn about the interdependence between proteins' structure and biological function as shaped by the folding process. In addition, within the module, students expand their knowledge of the properties of lipids and their importance for the functioning of biological membranes. During the course, students are introduced to selected problems and research methods at the interface of modern biology, biochemistry and biophysics (including the latest cell research techniques).
List of modules that must be completed before starting this module (if necessary): not applicable
Learning outcome of the module Codes of the learning outcomes of the programme to which the learning outcome of the module is related [level of competence: scale 1-5]
The student knows and understands the relationship between the structure and function of proteins and have an extended knowledge of the protein folding process. Can list and describe techniques to isolate and characterise proteins. Knows techniques to study the sequence and structure of proteins. [E1]
W01 [1/5]
The student knows and understands biological membranes' structure, dynamics and functions in terms of biochemical and biophysical properties. Knows the methods and techniques used to study the properties of biological membrane components. [E2]
W02 [1/5]
The student can identify and describe state-of-the-art techniques for determining protein structure and stability and protein-ligand interaction parameters. [E3]
W07 [1/5]
The student can carry out the experiment correctly, document and present the results of the determinations and present their interpretation. [E4]
