Set of Diploma Courses III: Specialist Contactology Field of study: Physics
Programme code: W4-S2FZ19.2025

Module name: Set of Diploma Courses III: Specialist Contactology
Module code: W4-FZ-OM-S2-4-25-11B
Programme code: W4-S2FZ19.2025
Semester: summer semester 2026/2027
Language of instruction: Polish
Form of verification: exam
ECTS credits: 3
Purpose and description of the content of education:
The module focuses on advanced diagnostics, selection and therapy of contact lenses in more difficult medical cases, such as corneal diseases, high-grade astigmatism, keratoconus, dry eye syndrome, post-operative conditions and other specialist indications. The student acquires knowledge and skills in the use of specialist lenses, monitoring the health status of patients and managing complications resulting from their use. Training content: 1. Lectures: o Principles of lens selection in medical cases (keratoconus, high degree of astigmatism, dry eye syndrome). o Types of specialist lenses (e.g. rigid lenses, hybrid lenses, scleral lenses, orthokeratological lenses, therapeutic lenses, lenses for post-operative correction). o Specialist diagnostics in contactology: corneal topography, aberrometry , anterior segment examination techniques. o Complications associated with the use of lenses in specialist cases. o Methods of monitoring patients with corneal diseases and specialized contactology needs. 2. Laboratory exercises: o Interviewing a patient with corneal diseases and specialist indications. o Diagnostics in advanced contact lens cases: corneal topography measurements, aberrometry. o Selection of specialist lenses, taking into account the individual needs of the patient (e.g. keratoconus, corneal irregularity, anterior transplant, post-traumatic condition). o Slit-lamp evaluation of the anterior segment of the eye and monitoring tolerance of specialized lenses. o Monitoring patient health and responding to lens-related complications. The module consists of lectures that introduce the theoretical foundations and issues related to advanced contact lens surgery, and laboratory exercises during which students acquire practical skills in specialist diagnostics, lens selection with particular emphasis on selection in difficult cases, and monitoring patients with complications. To pass the practical part, students prepare a case presentation, including a detailed description of the diagnostic tests performed and the lens selection process in a difficult clinical case using specialist contact lenses. Additionally, students submit a summary of patient charts, taking into account the number of contact patients examined. The module ends with an exam covering the theoretical and practical parts, which tests skills related to diagnostics, selection of specialist lenses and management of complications.
