Module name: Set of Diploma Courses II: Ophthalmic Pharmacology
Module code: W4-FZ-OM-S2-3-25-08D
Programme code: W4-S2FZ19.2025
Semester: winter semester 2026/2027
Language of instruction: Polish
Form of verification: course work
ECTS credits: 2
Purpose and description of the content of education:
The module focuses on education in the field of ophthalmic pharmacology for optometrists, covering both the theoretical foundations of action and application of drugs used in the diagnosis and therapy of eye diseases, as well as practical aspects of their safe use in everyday clinical work. Emphasis is placed on developing the skills of effective communication with patients, including explaining the purpose of administering diagnostic drugs, discussing potential side effects and managing adverse reactions. The module also includes legal and ethical aspects related to pharmacotherapy in optometry, as well as standards of practice in accordance with current medical guidelines. Training content: 1. Basics of pharmacology: • Routes of drug administration • Cellular and molecular mechanisms of drug action • Drug Receptors • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics: rational dosing and duration of drug action • Drug Biotransformation • Basic Drug Interactions, Side Effects • Forms and routes of drug administration in ophthalmology 2. Measures used in ophthalmological and optometric diagnostics • Local anesthetics • Drugs affecting the pupil and accommodation of the eye • Diagnostic dyes 3. Drugs used in the treatment of eye diseases • Antibiotics and antiviral drugs • Anti-inflammatory drugs (steroidal and non-steroidal) • Antiallergic drugs (antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers) • Artificial tears and preparations supporting the treatment of dry eye syndrome • Antiglaucoma drugs • Drugs used in AMD treatment • Other groups of ophthalmic drugs • Systemic Adverse Events and Interactions of Ophthalmic Drugs • The influence of systemic drugs on the visual organ • Preservatives in ophthalmic preparations and drug storage • Microbiological purity of eye medications • Regulations on the use of medications by optometrists As part of their own work, the student, based on lecture notes and supplementary literature, strives to consolidate the knowledge acquired. The module is in the form of lecture classes. The lecture in the form of a multimedia presentation discusses selected issues in the field of ophthalmic pharmacology. The module ends with a graded test that assesses knowledge of the theoretical foundations of pharmacology and the ability to use drugs in ophthalmology in practice.
