Purpose and description of the content of education: | The module focuses on the specifics of geriatric optometry, including diagnosis and selection of appropriate visual aids for the elderly. The aim is to develop skills related to diagnosis and management of vision problems in elderly patients and support in the selection of appropriate visual aids that improve the quality of life of these patients.
Training content:
1. Geriatric optometry:
o Changes in the optical system of the eye during the aging process (e.g. presbyopia, changes in the lens).
o Age-related diseases such as cataracts, AMD, glaucoma.
o The impact of systemic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hypertension) on the visual organ in old age.
2. Vision assessment in older people:
o Conducting accurate vision diagnostics in the context of age.
o Methods of assessing visual function and adapting tests to the needs of geriatric patients.
3. Visual aids:
o Selection of appropriate glasses, contact lenses, optical aids.
o Vision-enhancing technologies, e.g. magnifying glasses, enlargers, electronic devices.
4. Vision rehabilitation:
o Rehabilitation techniques for patients with age-related vision impairment.
o Working with patients who require adaptation to life with limited vision.
5. Psychosocial aspects of caring for older people with vision problems:
o Psychological aspects of vision loss and supporting patients in adapting to changing visual ability.
The module is organized as lectures and laboratory exercises. Lectures that introduce the theoretical foundations and issues related to geriatric optometry and the selection of visual aids. Laboratory exercises during which students acquire practical skills in assessing the vision of geriatric patients and selecting appropriate visual aids.
As part of their own work, the student, based on lecture notes and supplementary literature, aims to consolidate the knowledge they have acquired. The module also develops the ability to work in a team and communicate effectively with the environment.
After performing the tests and selecting visual aids, the student prepares a case presentation and submits a summary of the patient examination cards, along with a summary of the number of patients examined.
The module ends with an assessment based on a test and a practical demonstration of the ability to select visual aids for geriatric patients. |
