The aim of the course is to gain general knowledge of the musical works of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism and Romanticism from a historical perspective, taking into account significant cultural phenomena, aesthetic trends and compositional styles. The aim is to develop students' ability to understand, based on historical and musical knowledge, the processes taking place in musical culture in a diachronic and synchronous system. The classes focus on the characteristics of music of particular eras based on source materials, literature on the subject, and musical examples. An important element of the classes are references to similar phenomena occurring in the culture, architecture, literature and visual arts of that time, which helps students turn their attention to the role played by music and how the arts often interpenetrated and complemented each other.
