Module code: 1BT_23_59
Programme code: W2-S1BT19.2023
Semester:
  • winter semester 2024/2025
  • winter semester 2023/2024
Language of instruction: depending on the choice
Form of verification: course work
ECTS credits: 3
Purpose and description of the content of education:
The aim of the module is to familiarise the Student with good laboratory practice, enabling the proper design and execution of life science laboratory experiments. As part of the module, the student is introduced to the operation of basic laboratory apparatus and equipment. He/she learns the basic rules of working in the laboratory. He/she works in the laboratory maintaining safety rules. In the second part of the module, the student focuses on learning and understanding the foundations of spectroscopic methods for the range of near ultraviolet and visible light (UV-VIS), applicable in biotechnology. The student learns the theoretical foundations of these methods, the apparatus and its calibration methods, and masters sample preparation methods. The student also learns about the techniques of quantitative and qualitative spectrophotometric analysis, their sensitivity, accuracy, sources, and nature of errors in such measurements as well as ways to eliminate them. The student will become familiar with the possibilities and limitations of using UV-VIS spectrophotometry in biotechnology.
