Continuous cultures in biotechnology Field of study: Biotechnology
Programme code: W2-S1BT19.2023

Module name: Continuous cultures in biotechnology
Module code: 1BT_23_21
Programme code: W2-S1BT19.2023
Semester:
  • winter semester 2026/2027
  • winter semester 2025/2026
Language of instruction: depending on the choice
Form of verification: course work
ECTS credits: 3
Purpose and description of the content of education:
The module familiarizes the student with the method of preparing and conducting continuous cultures using bacterial strains capable of degrading xenobiotic substances. Since properly conducted continuous cultures require prior research with the use of batch cultures, the student has the opportunity to verify the previously acquired skills in performing these cultures. The student uses the obtained results to design continuous cultures and then to verify mathematical calculations' correctness during their laboratory performance. The final results allow the student to assess the correctness of the designed activities. In self-conducted experiments, the student acquires the skills to work in a specialized biotechnology laboratory, independently constructs simple experimental systems, recognizes hazards and rules of dealing with xenobiotic pollution, collects empirical data and analyzes and interprets the results of the experiments. The analysis of scientific articles provided by the lecturers allows the student to learn about continuous cultures' effectiveness and assess their importance in the biotechnology market. Student in teams prepare a project and then, on its basis, performs and evaluates the operation of the installation for continuous cultivation of microorganisms.
