Purpose and description of the content of education: | The module aims to provide the student with (1) knowledge of the functions of the animal's body in terms of understanding the systems and mechanisms that protect life processes, mechanisms of regulation of physiological processes, and functional relationships between the environment and the animal in a comparative and broader aspect, taking into account human physiology; (2) obtaining practical skills to perform experiments and analyze selected parameters characterizing the functions of various animals, their proper development and interpretation of results verified based on available source materials.
Lectures cover aspects of phenomena integrating body functions with various physiological regulation mechanisms. Based on the knowledge obtained about the systems and mechanisms that maintain the animal's life and the relationship between the animal and the environment, the student learns about the phenomena associated with maintaining homeostasis and repair mechanisms.
Conversation classes enable students to read additional literature related to animal physiology (other optional textbooks, popular science articles, and review publications). They allow the student to express himself in a broader scope on the issues covered by the course curriculum. They enable discussion on selected problems and allow for discussion of emerging doubts. To a large extent, they enable conducting classes at a high substantive level in those topics where it is difficult to perform experiments or laboratory measurements.
Laboratory classes teach students to conduct experiments, measure selected physiological parameters and observations, properly process the collected data and analyze them, prepare adequate protocols and conclusions from the tasks performed, as well as the ability to verify them based on available source data. They also teach bioethical behavior towards experimental animals and the ability to use alternative physiological models or virtual laboratories where experiments on vertebrate animals cannot be carried out. Thus, the student acquires the ability to use other available sources of information (films, computer animations, computer models). |
